The guests we serve are an economically disadvantaged population confronting limited opportunities in comparison to other residents in the Bronx, NY, and in the USA generally.
Our community is infamously infested with substance abuse, domestic violence, early pregnancy, school dropout and other factors associated with poverty. The neighborhood we serve is in the Morrisania section of the South Bronx.
It is among the poorest and most deprived urban communities in New York state, and is characterized by food insufficiency and the absence of economic opportunities.
The ethnic composition of the community is 40% Hispanic, 47% percent African-American while 13% are undocumented immigrants from Africa, Asia and the Caribbean. Morrisania is a disadvantaged community beset by educational neglect, limited economic opportunities and job discrimination. Women complete 70% of the world's working hours, but receive only 10% of the world's income.
